Events and Media
The events below celebrated the 2019 publication of Embracing The Dragon: One Mother’s Relentless Search for Healing and Hope, a memoir by Lindsay Beane. Her story begins in 1993 when her second child is diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, an inherited and incurable fatal disease. The remarkable combination of alternative healing approaches, western medical protocols, and a fierce mother’s love completely reversed her son’s fatal prognosis. So impressive was this example of “radical remission,” their story became the first non-cancer Healing Story of the Month on the Radical Remission Project website. Lindsay also invited the general public to Book Talks in July and August of 2020 to discuss Embracing The Dragon that were held on Zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The most recent event was a 2021 interview with Pat Farnack on WCBS News Radio in New York City.

Bio
Dr. Beane grew up on a small working farm on the coast of New England in the 1950s with a dream of becoming a concert pianist. After years of study with music virtuosos in Paris and Boston, a wrist injury compelled her to change careers. Transitional steps over the next few decades included teaching cultural arts in Boston's public schools supported by Massachusetts Chapter 636 Desegregation funding to facilitate court-ordered bussing. She made Super-8 films with at-risk teenagers, one of which was screened at the 1985 International Non-Professional Film Festival in Tunisia and aired on DEEP DISH T.V. in NYC. She also produced an hour-length documentary about three teenage mothers that was presented at the Children's Defense Fund teen pregnancy prevention conference.
Dr. Beane’s work with at risk teenagers eventually led to a career in the realm of social justice, equity, and public health. She completed a doctorate in behavioral science and public health in 2009 at Morgan State University, Baltimore’s largest HBCU. As a planning and fundraising consultant, she has helped to secure over $100 million for Federally Qualified Health Centers, HIV providers, and other health systems. Dr. Beane's third book, HIV Testing and Risk, describes her findings from a household survey on HIV conducted in a Baltimore neighborhood that had been devastated by the epidemic. The study was funded by the National Institute On Drug Abuse.
Lindsay Beane, DrPH, is a seasoned writer, trainer, and health care planning consultant. Her published books include Embracing The Dragon, a memoir chronicling her second child's stunning recovery from an incurable fatal disease when alternative healing approaches such as acupuncture and herbal medicine were used alongside conventional western protocols. She also wrote a children's story, My Brother Wins Every Eating Contest (illustrated by C.J. Love), to enable parents to help their healthy child process complicated emotions resulting from their sibling’s illness, such as fear, guilt, and resentment.
